The USDA and Michelle Obama unveiled the new “food pyramid’ A DINNER PLATE! I must say I was a bit surprised and very pleased with this new image. It is very user friendly and easy to understand. You can go to their site and click on each section for a clear explanation of what each food group is and how to get the amount you need. The big changes: MORE fruits and veggies HALF YOUR PLATE to be exact! Half of your grains should be WHOLE GRAINS. Reduce sodium, replace sugary drinks with WATER!
There are so many parts that excite me about this new site and information. I love the section where they touch on vegetarian diets, stating that: “Vegetarian diets can meet all the recommendations for nutrients. The key is to consume a variety of foods and the right amount of foods to meet your calorie needs.” And of course who wouldn’t LOVE that they include SOY MILK in the dairy section!! This will help open the eyes of people around us and make it easier to share information about the way I eat without all blank stare and questions……. I hope. At least it will make us a little less weird.
One small step for man, one giant step for VEGETARIANS! We are becoming more mainstream…. I wonder if they will ever get rid of the “dairy” section… I know they have come along way so for now I will just celebrate that!!
