Newbie – Making Recipes Your Own

I started my day by placing four sweet potatoes in my crock pot on low to cook for eight hours. I knew I wanted to make something to go along with them. I found the perfect pairing  with Maintenance Mommy’s recipe, Oh My Goodness Gravy . Whenever I am cooking I use the recipes as a guideline to follow, sometimes that works out great other times… not so much. Today was a success. I took the recipe above and added a few things that I want to share with you.

I started with the oil and added 1 sweet onion finely chopped. I let that saute until clear, then added two cloves of garlic, minced. I also added about 1 1/2 cups of cooked black beans after the gravy is ready. (I added a little extra water because of the extra items.) While the gravy was cooking I steamed one bunch of organic kale and chopped up two of the sweet potatoes to create our delicious dinner. Very simple, quick, and healthy. Three out of four of my kids loved it! (my forth needed some couching and cheering, but she ate it all).

This is a perfect example of using our recipes to make them your own. We encourage you to take our recipes as guidelines and add more veggies or leave out something that you don’t like. Our hope is to help you on your journey, we want you to be comfortable in your kitchen cooking with your favorite items.
