I have been sad all day. The kind of sadness that seeps into your cells and you just can’t seem to shake it.
I woke up early and in the dark morning hour saw that I had received an email from a dear friend titled “Bad News…”.
I let out an audible cry as I read about the return of her cancer. She is in her 30’s and is a wonderful mother to 3 children.
She has been fighting breast cancer for years and just discovered the cancer cells have spread to her brain. We all hear
stories like this, but suddenly it becomes so uniquely painful when it is someone you love.
And what do you say….what can you say…”Sorry”? It just doesn’t seem like enough.
Cancer. Oh how I am becoming too familiar with that word as I get older. I fear that over time it will establish an unwelcome
presence in my life. And yet I feel like I am already preparing for that battle. Not only for myself, but for everyone that
I love, and for anyone that will listen.
This is one of the reasons Whole Food Mommies was created; DISEASE PREVENTION. My sweet friend has an agonizing
battle to face. She will do everything in her power to survive – she’s a fighter.
But as for the rest of us……If there was something that you could do today that could possibly improve your chances of never
having to experience things like chemotherapy and radiation….would you do it? What statistics would you need to see to be
convinced? Would a number like 5% decrease in your chances of cancer be enough for change or would it need to be
something like 90%? I guess at some point these are questions we all need to ask ourselves. The information is out there.
These days it is almost everywhere -and so easily accessible. “Veteran Mommie’s” last post titled We Can do Better had a
list of “our heroes”. This is the perfect place to start. These doctors have dedicated their life’s work to researching and
preventing disease. They know what they are talking about and they have the statistics to back it up.
I know I can speak for all of three of us “Mommies” when I say that the reason we eat the way that we do is because we
truly believe we will be healthier because of it. Yes, it might be hard turning down a milkshake and snacking on broccoli
(now I am speaking only for myself 🙂 Yes it might be hard ordering a salad when everyone else is ordering steak.
But I believe that little by little these small choices add up to be so much more. I believe that I am arming my body against
the potential harms of disease. Life is unpredictable; and there are certainly no guarantees. But I am so hopeful that some
choices I make today will benefit me tomorrow.
