Newbie – CHICKEN is BAD!!

       This is some of the most frustrating news to me. Chicken was my food of choice because it was such a “healthier” choice, right? WRONG! I will never eat a piece of chicken again. I wrote a blog prior to this one, when I first learned of the DAMAGE CHICKEN CAUSES.  Just recently I read an article about a woman who is currently suing, McDonald’s, Burger King, and Friendly’s for not posting a warning sign in their restaurant.       I did a side by side comparison of (a lean cut) beef-chicken-turkey. I was surprised to see that they are all pretty even and NOT HEALTHY for our body.

  • Sirloin steak, choice
  • Total Fat grams: 7.2
  • Saturated Fat grams: 2.8
  • Cholesterol milligrams: 89
  • Chicken, skin on, light and dark meat
  • Total Fat grams:13.6
  • Saturated Fat grams: 3.8
  • Cholesterol milligrams: 88
  • Turkey, packaged ground
  • Total Fat grams: 12.8
  • Saturated Fat grams: 4.5
  • Cholesterol milligrams: 90

      Not only does chicken have equal or more amount of cholesterol and fats, but it has to be cooked at a higher temp to ensure that  we don’t get sick from it, causing it to activate PhIP :PhIP is part of a chemical family known as heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and has been linked to cancer in numerous scientific studies. The National Toxicology Program administered by the National Institutes of Health has identified PhIP as carcinogenic, as has the International Agency for Research on Cancer. 


    The more articles I read, the more concerned I become. However, I get more frustrated, the information on the surface is so vague. It makes it easy to argue both sides, but if you dig deeper you can find real facts


    All Carl’s Jr stores in California currently have a sign posted somewhere in their store that reads something along these lines: (I am hoping to find and post a pic of it soon)

 WARNING: the food and beverages served here contain chemicals that may cause cancer and if pregnant may cause birth defects. 


    People are asking why on chat forums, but the attitude in the answers I am seeing are shocking (well, only because of my current research I would’ve felt the same a year ago).  It is a “Who cares its just a self protection thing” or “It doesn’t really mean anything” or my personal fav (because I use to use it myself) “sure, everything causes cancer”. For all those out there asking why they have to do that, read Proposition 65


       It’s crazy to me that only California has a law protecting them from harmful toxins in their food and drinks. I want a law in my state… or even better, in my country!! We have the right to know and chose whether we want to consume cancer promoting foods.

****Carl’s Jr is not the only store that will have a sign like this posted. PCRM is currently suing several chains, start watching for more signs to go up (cali) in McDonald’s, Chick-fil-A, Chili’s, T.G.I. Friday’s, Outback Steakhouse, Burger King, KFC, and Applebee’s.

        As I have mentioned before, I am genetically predisposed to getting cancer because of BRCA 1. However, I feel more empowered everyday by the nutrition information I find. The last place you will see me is….. well, anywhere with a piece of grilled chicken on my plate!!!
