    • As a WHOLE FOOD MOMMY- we highly promote "CONSCIOUS EATING".

      What does the word CONSCIOUS mean?


      con-scious [kon-shuh`s]


      1.  Aware of what one is doing

      2.  Aware of one's own existence, sensations, thoughts, surroundings, etc.


      As MOMMIES, when we are




      I know for me, the nutrient density of the food in MY HOME is directly connected to how CONSCIOUS I am about what goes in my mouth.  I know when my life gets busy, it becomes easier and easier to become less and less AWARE.


      Here are some helpful hints THAT WORK FOR ME AS A BUSY MOMMY- These help me be MORE CONSCIOUS ABOUT what I'm eating.


      1.  MAKE A PLAN

      Plan your weekly MEALS!  I know you have heard this before...but this time- LET'S DO IT!  Put it into ACTION (just so you know- I am talking to myself right now).  Sit down Sunday night and fill in your weekly dinner schedule.  The KEY word in this helpful hint is ACTION.


      2.  SET A GOAL ---> HAVE A VISION

      When I have a vision set in my mind AND ON PAPER on my families HEALTH & NUTRITION and I envision the RESULTS that will happen and are happening...everything seems to happen much easier.  I would suggest clearly defining this vision- and looking at it often.  I personally have a VISION BOARD hanging next to my bed where I place my goals.  I have a spot on my board that is designated for MY HEALTH & MY FAMILIES HEALTH.  A prior goal has been to not eat ANY SUGAR for 10 days.  While I am focusing on this you think my children ate less sugar?  That's a BIG YES!  I had fun making non-sugar dessert that whole week and half and there were no complaints.


      3.  Have as MANY NUTRIENT DENSE FOODS in your home as possible.

      If you have many wonderful healthy foods to choose from, even when you slip into the "unconscious" for a little while- you might not find too much trouble.  To have the healthy options be abundant in your home helps protect you from these slips.


      4.  Start your day off RIGHT-

      I like to drink 1 quart of water first thing in the morning then I drink a cup of herbal tea.  When I accomplish this quick and easy task- it seems my mind is more clear during the day and thus I am more conscious.  Try it- it works for me :)


      5.  Be conscious of ONE eating goal every 7 days.

      I used to have a whole list of "My DAILY EATING TO DO's" and found it almost impossible to complete them all.  They are all still part of my daily desire to eat healthy- but I choose ONE to focus on every week.  When I am SET on accomplishing that ONE goal- the others seems to happen without too much effort.  But here is the KEY- YOU HAVE TO OBEY YOURSELF and no matter what- accomplish that ONE GOAL.  My last week GOAL was to drink 8 glasses of water that day.  There was one night that I had to stay up a little bit longer to gulp down 2 of them- because I had forgotten.  BUT I DID IT!  There is POWER in obeying SELF.  Give it a try!

      To end- I want to share One of the biggest HELPS for me when I am striving to EAT has to do with the 2nd definition of CONSCIOUS:


      Aware of one's own existence, sensations, thoughts, surroundings, etc.


      When I practice being aware of my THOUGHTS through out the day...Removing the negative and increasing the positive...AND I have a VISION in place of how I want my family to EAT- That's when the magic happens!

    • Thoughts about Coconut Milk

    • If you have read anything about us "Whole Food Mommies" you know that COW's MILK is considered a "bad word" in our homes.  We have many blogs about why we harbor these feelings towards dairy- and before you think we are being rude- you can read more about our thoughts here and here.


      So what milk do we use in our homes?  On a daily basis- we all use RICE milk and SOY milk.  I prefer RICE milk- it seems a little more mild, which our kids like and just works well in our home.  I have read the RICE milk contains a lot of CARBS/SUGAR.  But I personally don't worry too much about this- because we use it so little.  I've also heard good and bad things about SOY milk.  So just find what works well with you and your family and go for it.


      IMPORTANT TIP:  It's beneficial for your families to NOT consume their calories from any type of liquid.  Opt for WATER when you can.  Many experts teach that ALL calories from liquid (except breastmilk for infants) is an empty calorie and should be avoided.  I remember Jeff Novick teaching this many times in his health seminars.


      So here is a question...WHAT ABOUT COCONUT MILK?


      There are 3 types of coconut milk that I know of.  I have included calories per serving as well as calories from fat- which tells us the exact percent of fat:


      1.  COCONUT MILK in a can / 1 cup / 552 calories / 479 from fat / 87% fat

      2.  COCONUT MILK LITE in a can / 1 cup / 150 calories / 120 from fat / 80% fat

      3.  COCONUT MILK in a quart container / 1 cup / 80 calories / 45 from fat / 56% fat


      My "percent of fat" rule for my home (when pertaining to packaged foods) is = FOODS THAT ARE 20% FAT OR BELOW ARE OK...ANYTHING ABOVE I WANT TO CONSUME SPARINGLY OR NOT AT ALL.


      Unfortunately- all 3 types of coconut milk are way above the 20%.

      AND...COCONUT milk has a high percentage of DIETARY SATURATED FAT- which is directly linked HEART DISEASE.  I know there is research out there that promotes the fat from coconut milk.  But we "whole food mommies" follow the advice from Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. & T. Colin Campbell- and ALL of their research shows that ANY TYPE OF Saturated Fat is not good for the body. 

      Another way I like to say that is- Our bodies do NOT benefit from any type of dietary Saturated Fat.  I know coconuts and other PALM foods have some essential nutrients and EFA's, but there are other PLANTS that we can gain these from that do not contain the saturated fat.


      On the FLIP side of things...I do have CANS of Coconut Milk LITE in my home.  It is a YUMMY ingredient for some desserts that we do eat it sometimes.  We just eat them sparingly.  Here is one delicious recipe you should try!


      If you are worried about making sure your kids consume the FAT they need- we recommend always opting for a WHOLE FOOD option.  The perfect option that is a daily part of our families diet is FLAX SEED.  Check out our blog about this nutrient dense food and other healthy fats here.

    • I'm sure we are all similar...We all WANT OUR CHILDREN TO SUCCEED in life. I want them to go as far as they want to- nothing holding them back.


      That is one of the biggest reasons I feed my children a plant based diet.  I believe giving them nutrient packed, fiber rich, WHOLE foods give their bodies the material to build for SUCCESS.  I'm sure you have heard this statement..."YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT".


      If we ALL only knew and felt the truth of this statement everytime we sat down to eat as a family- I believe families would be more CONSCIOUS about what they are putting into their bodies.  Our food is our building materials for our body...SO WHAT DO YOUR KIDS 2X4'S LOOK LIKE?


      Are they STRONG, SOLID, STRAIGHT boards? 

      Or are they flimsy crooked pieces of rotting wood?


      Let's visualize this "rotting wood" might sound a little harsh but let's go there.  Maybe "going there" will help you become AWARE of places that you NEED to change...and with this AWARENESS can come MOTIVATION!


      Rotting wood is WEAK.  So when I find WEAK places in my life...I know it's time to spend energy and create strength at the CORE of the weakness.

      A weakness I see in America today is that children are moving into adulthood eating 90 percent of their caloric intake from dairy products, white flour, sugar, and oil.  ALL DISEASE PROMOTING FOODS.

      Whether you have been striving to feed your family a more WHOLE food diet...or you are just beginning on this journey of becoming more aware:  WE ALL HAVE WEAK PLACES, PLACES WE CAN IMPROVE.  Don't let thoughts and emotions discourage you...use these as FUEL to get moving.  It's your children's bodies we are talking about.


      Where is ONE place you can improve right now to better provide a quality diet for your family?


      Decide to "eat out" less

      Decide to NOT buy your normal snacks but to have more fruits in your kitchen for a quick treat

      Decide to plan your DINNERS in the morning so you have no excuses when dinner calls

      Decide to set a better example for your kids- so they can learn from YOU how to BUILD their Bodies STRONG


      Define where it is you want to IMPROVE and set the intention to do it...TODAY!

      AND...everytime you hear your children say "I CAN'T...." Whether it's at the dinner table as they examine their healthy plant of food...or any other time in life.  YOU STOP THEM!!! And you have them say "I KNOW I CAN!" five times (yelling it if they are up for it).

      You want your children to SUCCEED- help them believe they can!

    • Healthy TIP for MOMMIES

    • Hello all of you STRONG & MIGHTY Mommies out there!!!


      Do you know how cool you are?  Not all mommies take the time to truly care about what they are putting in their kids mouths.  I've heard Mom's say that they are happy if they can even get their kids to eat, let alone something healthy.  It takes a strong mother to take the time to THINK about healthy foods for their children.  Not only to THINK... but DOGood JOB!!!



      Here is a fun TIP that I have been doing in my home to help my children's CONFIDENCE in their abilities be at a HEALTHY level.  (AND YES...this can link to HEALTHY FOOD).


      A good friend recently told me by the time children reach the age of 8 they will have been told "NO" 40,000 times.  I don't know about you, but I don't want my children to be accustom to this WORD...accustom to believing that this is how life is suppose to be...never getting what you want.  I know that as a parent it is our responsibility to tell our children NO...even tell them NO a lot.

      But here is a really cool idea:  Every time you tell your children "NO"... give them two "YES'".


      For example:

      Today my little girl wanted popcorn for breakfast.  I told her the same time I told her YES to having a smoothie in her favorite cup or YES to having OATMEAL with her favorite toppings.


      So if you did this EVERYTIME you told your children "NO"...they would have heard "NO" 40,000 times when they turn 8...but they would have also heard "YES" 80,000.


      I want my kids to know & believe they have the ability to do anything they set their MINDS to.  I do not want them to believe that life is full of NO's...but LIFE is full of YES's...endless YES's.


      So here is to saying YES to healthy WHOLE foods...and to LOVING OUR KIDS SO MUCH...that they will always say "YES" to using & magnifying their unique gifts & talents!!!
